Regions to get a better view on the land with LiDAR
- News and announcements
Land Information Minister Eugenie Sage and Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones have announced up to $19 million of co-funding for improved mapping in regional New Zealand.
Using LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology, Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) can create detailed 3D maps of the ground, including buildings and plants. To date this has been mostly available in the main centres. This additional funding will help LINZ open it up to the regions.
Local government will be able to use this pinpoint-accurate data to make better predictions and decisions about the world around them, such as planning for infrastructure, understanding the environment and identifying potential hazards. LINZ will also collate the information and release it as open data for everyone to use.
