Investing to unlock Rotorua's potential

The Under-Secretary for Regional Economic Development, Fletcher Tabuteau, was in Rotorua on Monday 24 September to announce that the Provincial Growth Fund will invest $27.4 million to redevelop the Rotorua Lakefront and Whakarewarewa Forest.

This investment will generate significant iwi and private investment, create hundreds of new jobs and unlock Rotorua’s potential as a world-class tourist destination.

The funding announced includes:

  • $19.9 million towards the redevelopment of the Rotorua Lakefront. This will include building new boardwalks, walkways, cycle-ways, landscaping and improving the visual connection between the city and the lake.
  • $7.5 million towards the development of the Whakarewarewa Forest. This will include renovating the forest entrance, improving car and bus parking, developing more cycle tracks, and building a visitor centre and amenities.

The total cost of the redevelopment work is $55 million which will be co-funded by the Provincial Growth Fund and the Rotorua Lakes District Council.

This is an exciting announcement for the people of Rotorua. It reflects the extensive effort of the local community and their willingness to work with central government to progress these projects, which will support a better future for Rotorua and its people.
