Government support for Timaru intersection
Published: 3 February, 2026
A $2.84 million grant from the Regional Infrastructure Fund (RIF) will support a project to clear bottlenecks on State Highway 1 in Timaru, unlocking major commercial development and new jobs.
The project will deliver a redesigned intersection with improved traffic flow, upgraded signalling, and safer pedestrian and cycle access.
The upgraded intersection will reduce transport delays, cut costs for businesses, improve reliability for freight and keep the local economy moving.
The upgrade will also enable the second stage of the Timaru Showgrounds development to proceed, which is expected to add 20,000 square metres of commercial space and create up to 300 long-term jobs in Timaru.
Construction is expected to provide jobs for up to 60 people.
Timaru Showgrounds Limited will contribute $1.3 million in co-funding for the intersection upgrade, bringing the total project cost to $4.15 million. NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi will deliver the project, expected to be completed by mid-2026.
