Southland industrial subdivision receives boost

The Government has provided a $3.1 million loan from the Regional Infrastructure Fund (RIF) to kickstart an industrial subdivision near Gore.
The $13.6 million project, positioned on State Highway 1, will transform underutilised farmland into a thriving industrial hub. It is expected to create up to 50 jobs during construction and attract industries such as fertiliser distribution, farm equipment services, warehousing, and retail.
The 43-hectare development is a 50/50 partnership between Ngāi Tahu iwi authority Hokonui Rūnanga and Robertson Transport Limited.
It addresses the critical shortage of large industrial lots in Gore District and supports the rūnanga to earn income from long-term leases, which will be used to fund health and social services for its people.
Gore District needs an additional 100 hectares of industrial land hectares to meet future growth. This investment from the RIF ensures that Southland has the infrastructure it needs to diversify its economy and build resilience.
Construction is expected to start in early 2026, following rezoning and consents.
The development is the first stage of a wider 100-hectare master plan for Hokonui Rūnanga, which later includes marae relocation and papakāinga housing.
